About the island

Lefkada is located in western Greece and is one of the most beautiful islands of the Ionian Sea. It is easily accessible by airplane (Aktion National Airport), and by car, since there is a swing bridge connecting it to the mainland.

Tourism is very well developed in the town and the east side of the island, whereas the west side is characterized by its unique natural beauty, with green mountains and crystal-clear waters… Some of the beaches of Lefkada, including Porto Katsiki and Kathisma, are very popular and have been ranked among the most beautiful in Europe. Nevertheless there are also many small secluded beaches, accessible only by foot or by small boats, which are still not widely known. Other beaches are ideal for sea-sports such as windsurfing, which is very common in Ai Giannis beach and in the gulf of Vasiliki.

Small picturesque villages distributed over the whole island still demonstrate the deep tradition of Lefkada. Some especially famous products of the island are its olive oil, honey, wine, lentils, salami, and pasteli.

Nydri Village

Nydri is a town and a community on the eastern coast of the island of Lefkada, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit Ellomenos. The Greek National Road 42 (Vasiliki – Lefkada (city) – Amfilochia) passes through the town. Nydri has a population of 800 inhabitants and the municipality comprises beautiful traditional coastline villages like Nydri, Geni, Vliho, Desimi, Perigiali & Mikros Gialos and the hillside villages: Paleokatouna, Alatro, Poros, Platistoma, Neohori, Vafkeri, Fterno, Haradiatika, Rahi  and  Katahori. Nydri is a popular tourist town. In the sea in front of Nydri are several small islands including Madouri, Skorpios, Skorpidi and Sparti. The island Skorpios is the property of the Ribolovlev family.

The German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld, having examined the geographical descriptions of Homer in the Iliad and the Odyssey believed that Lefkada was Homer’s Ithaca, and that the palace of Odysseus was located west of Nydri on the south coast of Lefkada. He performed extensive excavations at Nydri and uncovered Mycenaean tombs, walls, ruins and artefacts which supported his hypothesis. Dörpfeld spent the last years of his life at Nydri and he is buried there.

Lefkada is one of the Greek Ionian Islands located off the west coast of mainland Greece. The island (also known as Lefkas and Leucade) is connected to the mainland by a 50 meter drawbridge that was built in the 1980s to replace the archaic chain-operated ferry originally introduced by the Emperor Augustus.

In fact Lefkada was not an island at all until the 5th century BC when the inhabitants dug a channel to separate themselves from the mainland.
